The Reproductive Health Nurses Chapter (RHNC) was founded through the partnership between Planned Parenthood Global (PPGlobal) and National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) The Reproductive Health Nurses Chapter (RHNC) is a specialized division within the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK), established to focus on advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Kenya. The formation of the RHNC is a strategic move to leverage the expertise and advocacy potential of nurses in addressing critical reproductive health issues across the country. Recognizing the unique position of nurses as frontline healthcare providers, NNAK initiated the RHNC to create a dedicated platform for SRHR advocacy and service delivery.
To tirelessly advocate for and provide comprehensive, equitable, and respectful sexual and reproductive healthcare services and information to all individuals, irrespective of age, gender, identity, or background, fostering a world where these rights are universally recognized and upheld.
A world where every individual, regardless of their age, gender, identity, or background, has the fundamental right to access comprehensive, equitable, and respectful sexual and reproductive health care.
The RHNC was formally established with the support of PP Global in the fiscal year 2023. This collaboration aimed to strengthen the capacity of nurses to advocate for and provide services, particularly in underserved and vulnerable communities. The initial focus was on Nairobi and Kajiado counties, selected for their distinct reproductive health challenges.
In Nairobi, the RHNC identified and trained healthcare providers in advocacy and communication, targeting young people in peri-urban informal settlements such as Mukuru kwa Njenga and Mukuru kwa Reuben. These areas were chosen due to their high population density, limited access to SRH services, and poor maternal health indicators. The trained nurses engaged in advocacy activities, serving as expert witnesses and raising awareness about SRHR issues.
Since its establishment, the RHNC has made significant strides in improving access to SRHR services and advocating for reproductive health rights. Key achievements include:
Training and Empowerment: The RHNC has successfully trained numerous healthcare providers in SRHR advocacy and service delivery, enhancing their ability to address reproductive health issues within their communities.
Community Engagement: Through workshops, seminars, and advocacy campaigns, the RHNC has raised awareness about SRHR issues, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations.
In Kajiado County, the RHNC partnered with the Men Engage Network Kenya to address critical issues such as teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions, gender-based violence, and female genital mutilation (FGM). The rural areas of Kajiado presented unique challenges, including unmet contraceptive needs and cultural practices that adversely affected reproductive health.
The RHNC’s efforts in these counties involved close collaboration with county health management teams and community leaders to develop and implement effective SRHR programs. By engaging with local stakeholders, the RHNC ensured that its initiatives were culturally sensitive and community-driven, fostering greater acceptance and sustainability.
